LIGHT TRUCK OVERTURNS

Driver Dies Of Injuries (From Our Own Reporter) WESTPORT, January 2. A young man from Christchurch died from injuries after a motor accident, two miles from Westport at 2.50 a.m. on Sunday, and two others in his light truck, also from Christchurch, were injured. The man who died was Richard John Winston Tossell, aged 20 years, of 27 Whitmore street ,and those injured were Edward Glean Perfect. 20 Ngarimu street, and Tony Meaclem, 5 Bard street. Perfect and Meaclem were thrown clear of the truck when it swung wide on crossing Martins creek bridge, on the way from Westport to Carters Beach, and turned over, but Tossell. the driver, was caught in the truck. He did not seem badly injured at the time, but later succumbed to internal injuries in the Buller Hospital. Perfect and Meaclem are suffering from abrasions, but Perfect was discharged from hospital yesterday. The truck hit the side of another truck, driven by Raymond P. Perkins, of Cape road. Westport, who was travelling to Westport. It carried on. hit the side of the bridge and overturned. None of those in Perkins’s vehicle were injured, and his truck was only slightly damaged, but Tossell’s vehicle was very extensively damaged. Considerable difficulty was experienced in notifying Tossell’s parents of their son's death, as they were on a camping holiday at the time of the accident. An inquest was opened before the Westport Coroner on Sunday and was adjourned after evidence of identification had been given. A post-mortem was carried out yesterday.
