ADMISSION OF CHINA TO U.N.
Gaitskell’s Call To Party (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, Dec. 31. The leader of the Labour Opposition, Mr Hugh Gaitskell, today called for talks to bring China into the United Nations. In a New Year message to party members he hit out at the Government’s "deafening silence” on foreign policy and said: “Now is the time when We should be pressing our allies for a new approach. We should initiate talks to bring the Peking Government into the United Nations.
“We should propose negotiations to establish a controlled zone of disarmament in Central Europe. We should be discussing the reform of the United Nations so that its structure reflects the new significance of the countries of Asia and Africa. "There is a great job to be done both in criticising the weakness of the Government and in putting forward our own constructive proposals,” he said.
