Several Upsets In S.I. Quarter-Finals

NELSON, January 2. In the third day’s play of the South Island tennis championships there were several upsets in the quarter-finals but the number one seed and men’s singles title-holder, R. Welsh (Southland), was untroubled to win his match against K. Wright (Nelson). He conceded only four games. The women’s singles quarter-final saw the number one seed, Mrs Roberts (Nelson), fall to the young sponsored player. Miss P. O'Carroll (Northland). Seeded number five. Miss O’Carroll took the match in 3 sets. Results are:—

Men’s Singles.—Quarter-finals: R. Welsh (Southland) beat K. Wright (Nelson), 6-2, 6-2; P. Strawbridge (Nelson) beat B. Banter (Marlborough), 6-3, 6-3: M. Delaney (Nelson) beat W. Scotlock (Nelson), 6-2, 6-2; G. Davidson (Otago) beat L. Johnson (Nelson). 6-4, 6-2. Women’s Singles.—Quarter-finals:

P. O’Carroll (Northland) beat V. Roberts (Nelson), 8-2, 2-8, 6-1; B. Soper (Nelson) beat D. Whiteman (Hutt Valley), 3-6, 6-4. 6-3; R. Jones (Canterbury) beat K. Williams (Canterbury), 5-7, 6-3, 6-4; B. Wright (Auckland) beat B. Buchton (Nelson), 6-3, 6-0. Men’s Doubles.—Quarter-finals: Harris and E. Johnson (Nelson) beat Ball and K. Wright, 4-6, 8-6, 6-4; Johns and W. Smith (Canterbury) beat Holland and Blair (Ohakea), 6-2, 6-1; Delaney and Strawbridge (Nelson) beat A. Smith and Eaton (Otago), 6-1, 6-3. Welsh and Mahoney (Southland) beat P. Angland and R. Goodall (South Canterb -ry). 6-3, 6-3.

Mixed Doubles.—Quarter-finals: C. Sara and L. Goodall (Nelson) beat V. Roberts and R. Harris (Nelson), 7-5, 9-7: K. Williams and G. Davidson (Canterbury) beat B. Soper and J. Walls (Nelson). 6-2, 7-5; B. Wright (Auckland) and R. Welsh (Southland) beat H. BUck (Marlborough) and T. Harniess .(Canterbury), 6-4. 6-2.
