Valaris And Cardinal King Selected

(From Our Chan Reporter* . OAMARU, January 2. Valaris and Cardinal King, which are both trained on the Oamaru course, are selected to win the double at the Oamaru Jockey Club’s New Year meeting tomorrow. The double will operate on the President’s Handicap and the Flying Handicap.

Valaris, which is trained by J. C. Hobbs, ran a sound race for fourth in the Waikouaitu Cup today. It was a placing he might have improved upon if he had not been forced to run three wide most of the way. Valaris will be ridden by W. D. Skelton, who will also have the mount on Cardinal King in the second leg.

The strongest rivals for Valaris might be Gaytana, which was just nosed out of first in the Waikouaiti Cup today, and Pendennis, the runner-up to Gold View in the open sprint at Washdyke on Saturday. Cardinal King will be having Ms first race since the Wellington spring meeting in October. He is the class sprinter of the field, capable of a smart effort when fresh, and one of his best runs under top-weight of 9-1 should be adequate to give him victory. The Orari trainer, L. H. Pratt, said today that Gold View is unlikely to compete at Oamaru. She will probably be reserved for the Wellington stakes at Trentham later this month. If she is absent the most solidly backed rivals of Cardinal King are likely to be Abou Ben Adhem, the open sprint winner at Waikouaiti today, and Vitamise. the third place-getter in the same race. There has been fine weather in the district and the forecast for tomorrow is favourable. The track will -be hard and fast.
