Quick Time-Gold View At Cramped Odds

The nine-year-old Quick Time and the three-year-old Gold View carried off the double at cramped odds at Washdyke on Saturday, the second day of the South Canterbury Jockey Club’s Cup meeting. Both were outright favourites, and both were ridden by the Wingatui jockey, R. J. Skelton.

Quick Time made the grade in open company at his fourth attempt. He won in authoritative style ,if%nly by a neck, for he was easing in the last few strides. Gay Tommy ran Mr B. F. Mears’s Defaulter gelding to a neck but Skelton said he did not have a moment’s anxiety. Quick Time’s win was well earned after a rather unlucky third behind Quite Able and Great Sensation in the Dunedin Cup five days earlier. Skelton said on Saturday that he was confident of victory in the straight _ after getting a “dream run” to the turn in a trailing position.

Quick Time’s seventh victory looked certain at the furlong when he was leading by the best part of two lengths but Gay Tommy’s late rush wider on the track put interest back into the finish. Gay Tommy was the tenth favourite in this, his first race from D. M. Kerr’s Riccarton stable. W. Beck, who rode Gay Tommy thought he lost a winning chance on the Cassock gelding through his failure to get clear a little earlier.

Gay Defoe ran up to something like his best form with a third half a length behind Gay Tommy. He played a hand in all the pacemaking and made a renewed bid for the lead inside the last furlong. Medbury was fourth, but did not really reach a contending position. Still he gave his backers more interest in the race than his stablemate, Personify. For no accountable reason. Personify stood in the stalls when the others were sent away, and took no part in the race. Record For Course Gold View ran the fastest six furlongs ever recorded-at Washdyke in winning the Rangitata Handicap. After streaking over the distance in Imln 11 l-ssec, Mr H. M. Coutts’s filly was a length and a half clear of Pendennis, the best of her rivals. Pendennis just caught Le Cheval, which helped to set the hot pace alongside Gold View. All the others felt the strain. Hopeful, the best of them, was in a gap of two lengths and a half. Vltamise, the second favourite for a win, was a weakening sixth just behind Abou Ben Adhem.

The Quick Time-Gold View combination carried 12.617 5s tickets (10,526 off-course) and returned £4 15s for £l. Nine wins from 12 starts is now the outstanding record of Gold View, which started her racing a year earlier with a third in the Nursery Handicap, won by Tarlon at Washdyke. The Orari trainer, L. H. Pratt, will take Gold View to Trentham for the Wellington Cup meeting. Quick Time and Gold View were two of five successful favourites on Saturday, when the club concluded a successful meeting in fine, warm weather. Racing was done on a firm track. On-course the totalis*tor Handled £38.433 lOs, Including £4085 10s on doubles, compared with £34.900 on Timaru Cup day last season. The total for the meeting was £76.294, an increase of £12,330 10s on last year. STAFFORD HANDICAP, Of £225: six furlongs. 1/1 FARE YE WELL (1) Miss V. M. H.
