Narrow Win For Zany On Addington Ist Day

Zany made a first winning run since being secured by Mr G. J. Francis, of Christchurch, and trained at Belfast by C. S. Donald, when she held off a determined challenge from Cassado in the H. H. Wauchop Handicap, the main race and second leg of the double on the opening day of the Canterbury Park Trotting Club’s summer meeting at Addington on Saturday.

Zany began best, but over the last mile she trailed Banjo. Zany was second into the straight and she was then pulled out to challenge. She raced clear, hotly pursued by Cassado. Zany fought on best to win by a long head. Samantha came home solidly for third a neck way, a length in front of Finestra, with a length to Banjo, which was followed closely by Spring Chat, Rustic Lad, Guard’s Brigade, which had broken near the seven furlongs, and Fox Able. The favourite. Peebles, was forced three wide most of the way and he was beaten at the two furlongs. The first leg, the Irwell Handicap, resulted in a decisive all-the-way win for Mystic Star, which had been beaten narrowly by Kingsdown Patch earlier in the week at Ashburton. Mystic Star beat King Anjou by two lengths, with Dark Signal a length away third, clear of Florita and Bonnie Lustre, with Maharaja, Queen’s Glow, Royal Brittania and Lavengro next. The Mystic Star—Zany (bracketed Con Scott) doubles combination paid £B3 17s for £l. The meeting was held in fine weather before a’ large crowd. The track was fast. Totalisator investments amounted to £87,557, including £8936 on the double, compared with £94,152 last year.
