ATHLETICS Plunket Shield Player Tries Hand With Shot

With many Christchurch athletes competing at holiday meetings at other centres fields for the post entry inter-club meeting at Rugby Park on Saturday were smaller than usual, but a number of visiting athletes took part. Among the visitors to the park was the Plunket Shield cricketer, K. Thomson, who could not resist the opportunity to attempt his old event, the shot put. Second place getter for Christchurch West High School at the interschool sports in this event in 1958, Thomson, without bothering to don athletic gear, took second place again by putting the 161 b weight 34ft Olin in the senior competition. After winning a close race in the senior 100 yards in 10.3 sec, A. Steel (High Schools) showed he will be a threat in subsequent 440 yard events by being a close second over this distance to B. Howman (Technical) who won in 31.5 sec. This was Steel’s first run at the distance since leaving Christchurch Boys’ High School at the end of 1959.

Although challenged in the senior two miles by an improving runner in B. Turner (Shirley), the Canterbury junior two mile record holder, D. Dixey (Winton), who is at present on holiday in Christchurch, had too much pace in the final lap, where he came away for a good win in 9min 27.55ec. Taking the lead from Turner in the second lap Dixey opened up a substantial lead. Turner fought back determinedly and after gradually closing the gap had further turns in the lead. Turner dashed to the front at six laps and a half but his 10 yard break was not sufficient to safeguard his position when Dixey made his final burst in the last lap. Standard Certificates Several road runners qualified for standard certificates issued by the Canterbury Road Runners’ Association for their performance in the 15 mile race. The former Canterbury harrier champion, J. K. Macdonald (University) gained an A grade certificate for his time of 84min 29sec, which was 3min 31sec inside the qualifying time. Already the holder of A grade standards for all the distances, the former New Zealand marathon representative. A. W. Richards (Technical) finished second in the second class qualifying time of 96min 26sec. Two others to qualify for second class awards were D. Mackley (Polytechnic), 96min 38sec. and W. Hobbs (Olympic) 99min 27sec, 33sec inside the qualifying time. A good effort was returned by the 17-year-old A. Bayard (Anglican) in the five mile junior road race, run in conjunction with the senior event. In completing the junior race in 28min 2sec, Bayard came into the ground closely behind Macdonald, who was starting his second five mile lap of the senior race. Miss M. A. M. Chamberlain had two good wins in the women's sprints taking the 75 yards in B.9sec and the 100 yatds in 11.7 sec. Second to Miss Chamberlain in the two flat sprints a Canterbury representative last season, Miss A. Coleman, competing for her home club. Manaia (Taranaki) won the 80 metre hurdles in 12sec.
