NATIONAL PARK FIRE
Outbreak Threatens Houses <S«w Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, January 2. Fire raged through a 1000-acre belt of scrub in Tongariro National Park today. Seven forestry workmen were sent to the fire early today, but by midday it was out of control and was threatening several houses on the National Park-Ttttangi highway. By early evening 15 men and a bulldozer had encircled the burning scrub in a firebreak. The fire was still burning after dark. There was no damage to property. A large bush fire which had been raging for about fopr days near Te Rangiita, on the southeastern side of Lake Taupo, appeared to have been brought under control late this evening. The fire was thought to have been started by careless hunters. Another fire, at Oruanui. about eeven miles north of Wairakei,
was also under control this evening.
