Frown And Moon Boy For Monday’s Double

Frown and Moon Boy could form the winning doubles combination on the second day of the Canterbury Park Trotting Club’s summer meeting at Addington on Monday.

Frown will contest the C. S. Howell Handicap at Addington today and if successful he will not incur a penalty in the New Year Handicap, the first leg of the double on Monday. Frown has won twice in his last four starts and should be too good for most in the field. Rustic Lad and Samantha both require wins in the H. H. Wauchop Handicap to be correctly placed in the New Year Handicap. If they fail today, they are unlikely to be produced. Rustic Lad is one of the early favourites for today’s race and if he wins will be in demand on Monday. Waitaki Child did well to finish eighth in the Ashburton Cup and will have bright prospects, as will the frontmarkers, Finestra and Reason Why. Diamond Hanover, Highland Heath, which will be bracketed with Harlequin Parade and the backmarker, Invicta, will also have suppdrters. The meeting between Moon Boy, Ordeal and a particularly strong

field of trotters in the Hornby Handicap, the second leg, will be one of the highlights of the two days. Moon Boy, third over 12 furlongs to Ordeal and Cat’s Luck at Ashburton last Monday, meets Ordeal on 12 yards more favourable terms over an extra furlong. Moon Boy is certain to be improved as a result of his race at Ashburton and is entitled to favouritism as he stays so well. However, he will not be set an easy task from 48 yards. Won At Ashburton Ordeal must be given a great chance after her thrilling win last Monday. She is one of the greatest trotters racing in New Zealand today and from 48 yards cannot be overlooked. Cat’s Luck, Reprimand, Au Fait and Rodger all trotted well enough at Ashburton to be considered as place prospects and should add interest to what should be a highly-entertaining contest. Mighty Hanover, second favourite at Ashburton, was a big disappointment. He was under pressure at the end of six furlongs and drifted right out to finish twelfth. He might have had an easy time since winning at Addington last month and it will not surprise if he is a harder horse to beat on Monday. A capacity field of three and four-year-old pacers will meet in the Cross Memorial Stakes. If Flying Note is as good as was thought earlier, he could atone for his defeat at the hands of Golden Rule at Ashburton in the New Zealand Champion Stakes. He looks to be close to Meadow Scott at an advantage of 24 yards in the handicaps and will need plenty of luck to win. Robin Dundee, another Southland pacer, is unbeaten in two starts, including an outstanding win in the’ New Zealand Oaks. She is assured of solid support.

Jolly Hal failed to do better than fourth at Ashburton after having what appeared to be every chance. He is better than that effort suggested and could be hard to beat.

Meadow Scott, from 48 yards, must be respected. If there is any loitering early, the race will be made to order for him and he should outstay most in the field. Summit Road, from the Jront, ■Happy Hunting, Boy Blue and Slick Chick are others expected to add interest to . the race.
