ATHLETICS TODAY
The decision of the Canterbury Amateur Athletic Centre to hold a post entry inter-club meeting at Rugby Park this Saturday is a welcome one. At this stage of the year many of the leading athletes are seeking extra competition as a build up to major events to come, while the ordinary rank and file athletes—the backbone of the sport—get their enjoyment from regular competition. Too often in the past, the break from inter-club competition in sometimes extending over three week-ends. Some athletes have off-set this by travelling to meetings in other areas such as South Canterbury or the North Island, where they have been able to include a circuit of meetings in their itinerary.
North Canterbury is singularly lacking in holiday carnival meetings that are attractions in other parts of the country. If these could be encouraged in the district it is probable they would prove as great a draw as elsewhere They would give variety to those who seek a break from regular competition at Rugby Park, as well as easing the burden on centre officials who may wish to take their holidays at this time.
