Tardy Keeler Skippers

STARTING on. time was not the The two yachts took different strong point for a number courses into Akaroa and Gazelle . , , , . , . , . looked to have a chance but of keeler skippers who took part Gale did better and came home in the annual race to Akaroa ahead. from Lyttelton last Tuesday.

Half the field of 14 craft had not crossed the line between the two .starting boats at the Heads when the time to race came in the morning. One boat had to be towed up the harbour to get away in time.

The late starters left anything up to 45 minutes behind time. The performance was described by Banks Peninsula Cruising Club officials as “disappointing.”

One of the latecomers was W. M. Cotter’s Peri Banu which, in spite of its self-imposed handicap—additional to the racing weight, managed to be the first boat into Akaroa harbour. Only one of the B class entries was away on time. This was P. J. Beaven’s Serica, which won the event on handicap. A feature of the race was the battle between the fibre-glass keeler, Gazelle (A. France), and Gale, sailed by L. G. Holder.
