GOODS SHED CONGESTION
. Freight Still Pouring In
Freight pouring into the Christchurch railway goods sheds is still fl problem for the Railways Department According to the district traffic manager (Mr C. J. Millin) it might be well into February before things settle into a normal routine.
“We are unloading 400 wagons a day since we appealed for help from the warehousemen and carriers,” Mr Millin said yesterday afternoon. “The accumulation at present is about 600 wagons, but we are handling the heaviest goods traffic ever and the ,pressure will be on for a while yet.” Mr Millin said he was grateful for the co-operation he had got in clearing the freight, but he still needed that co-operation. Shipping would continue to be heavy until the end of January, West Coast mines were opening again on January 16 and the grain season would be getting under way during the month. “Everything will be needed to keep the goods ‘ flowing. There can be no slackening at all. We will want every wagon we can lay our hands on. “We still want the support of everyone. The pressure is still on and it is likely to be some time in- February before there is a let-up,” Mr Millin added.
