The German Miracle
Sir, —Has Basil Cook been to West or East Germany recently? I question his assertion that the German Democratic Republic has progressed “faster than West Germany, except in militarism.” Though East Berlin may not give a completely accurate picture of East Germany, the impression I have of it still makes me wonder how Mr Ulbricht and company can so confidently proclaim the superiority of their system. Has Basil Cook seen the ruins, the bomb craters, the houses still riddled with bullet holes, the people queueing for food, the cars with lockable petrol caps (for petrol is rationed), the troops, the impressive facade that is Stalin-allee, the propaganda boards, heard the jamming and the propaganda? My most powerful memory, however, is of driving around East Berlin at night and seeing, maybe, 30 people, 20 of them armed soldiers patrolling. Rather, a sobering picture.—Yours, etc., H.S. December 30, 1960.
