TWO SAFES RAIDED AT NEW BRIGHTON
The theft of £l4l 9s 5d in cash from a safe and an attempt to break open another safe, both in New Brighton, were reported to the C. 1.8. at the Christchurch Police Station yesterday. Between 11.45 p.m. on Thursday and 8.45 a.m. yesterday, a window in the New Brighton Returned Services’, Association hall in New Brighton road was forced open. The intruders went through the card and snooker rooms and forced the locked door of the office.
The safe was pulled away from the wall and the back levered off it. Three cheques amounting to £26, as well as the cash, were taken from the safe.
On the same night, entry was gained into the T.A.B. office at 178 Marine parade, New Brighton, by removing the louvres of a window at the back of the building. An attempt was made to break the locking mechanism of the safe. Damage worth £2 was caused by the intruders.
Woman Killed In Fall From Car (New Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN, December 30. An elderly woman was killed instantly today when she fell from a moving car near Balclutha. She was: Mrs Mary Ann Blight, aged 73, of 6 Trafford street, Gore. The driver of the car was Bertie Archibald Familton, of the same address. Mrs Blight opened the door to close it more securely when the wind caught it and flung it back, dragging her with it. • The accident occurred at Kaihiku. 11 miles south of Balclutha. at 6.30 p.m. • Honesty pays, but it don’t seem to pay enough to suit a lot of people.—Kin Hubbard.
