CROWDED PORT AT AUCKLAND
Nine Ships In Stream
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, December 30. Nine ships were lying in the stream today in the congested Port of Auckland. It is .the longest queue of ships waiting for a berth since the waterfront strike of 1951. Two of the vessels are using lighters to unload. The port closed down for the week-end at noon today—but shippers hoped to get the Hauraki, Chowa Maru, and Port Phillip away tonight. This will leave berths vacant, but the Argentinean Reefer, due to arrive from Honolulu' had to go straight to a berth to unload oranges.
The Tremeadow and the Javanese Prince are due on Monday, and the Castel Felice and Wanganella on Tuesday, when waterfront work resumes. The labour situation was met yesterday when jobs were given 500 non-union workers.
When a man seeks your advice he generally wants your praise.— Philip Chesterfield.
