PHOTOGRAPH OF DUKE

Storm Over M.C.’s Advertisement

(N.Z. Press Association —Copyright) LONDON, December 28

A tiny slip of paper—with the Duke of Edinburgh’s picture on it—has caused a storm in Britain, the “Daily Express” reported. The paper is a visiting card which a London toastmaster, Mr Frederick Berman, has been using to advertise his services; It shows the Duke and himself at a function.

Buckingham Palace has protested. It said a member of the Royal Family was being used for advertising purposes. The Association of Toastmasters and M.C.’s—which refused to allow Mr Berman membership some years ago—has protested to him about “this unpardonable breach of etiquette.” Mr Berman returned the association’s letter in an unstamped envelope. Scrawled across the bottom was: “Save your advice for your members.” Next month the Lord Chamberlain’s comptroller (Brigadier Sir Norman Gwatkin) will hold a meeting to try to iron the matter out

Mrs Berman said tonight: “I can’t think what all the fuss is about. The palace told my husband be shouldn’t use the .picture of himself and Prince Philip, so he stuck a bit of paper over the Prince’s photograph.” Tourist Die. Suddenly.—Miss Amy Medora Bender, aged 58, of 38 Kelburn parade, Wellington collapsed and died suddenly at Tarras yesterday. She was on a conducted tour of ‘he southern lakes region.—(P.A.)
