WOMEN’S CRICKET Only Three Hours Of Play In Provincial Matches

Steady rain during the morning in Christchurch restricted play tn the Hallyburton-Johnstone women’s inter-provincial cricket competition to only three hours yesterday. Play in the Canterbury-Otago match started at 2.20 p.m. and in the Auck-land-Wellington match at 3 p.m. CANTERBURY V. OTAGO Canterbury slumped badly in Its first innings against Otago and at stumps had lost eight wickets for 80. The Otago bowling was dry and accurate and kept all the Canterbury batsmen subdued. E. Overend started well with 12, and P. Blackler and P. Moore compiled 14 and 11 respectively. After some cheap wickets had fallen O. Williams and B. Turner restored the position. Williams was aggressive for 15 not out. and Turner compiled a patient 13 not out. E. Paton bowled receptively for Otago and earned her five wickets for 17 runs. Powell took a fine catch early in the match to dismiss Wellington's I. Lamason, and Wellington could not recover from this early setback. Although only scoring nine runs, A. Morrison batted well, and B. Turner was unfortunate to be dismissed for the same score. A. Adam showed some good shots and at stumps was the only member of her team to reach, double figures.
