NEW YEAR HONOURS

Two Knighthoods; C.M.G. For Dr Averill (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, December 30. Knighthoods have been conferred on Mr Guy Richardson Powles, High Commissioner for New Zealand in India, and on the Hon. Francis Boyd Adams, who recently retired as resident Judge of the Supreme Court in Christchurch, in the New Zealand New Year honours list announced today. Mr Powles is created a Knight Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, and the Hon. F. B. Adams a Knight Bachelor.

Two honours recipients of particular interest are Mrs Rowena Chatfield, better known as Rowena Jackson, who won fame in London as a prima ballerina, and Mr Murray Halberg, now a worldfamous distance runner, after his win in the; 5000 metres at the Rome Olympic Games this year. Both have been awarded the M.B.E. • In addition to Sir Francis Adams, Christchurch recipients of honours include Dr. L. C. L. Averill, chairman of the North Canterbury Hospital Board, who receives the C.M.G., and Mr C. W. F.
