MOVE ALONG, PLEASE!
181/ WHIM WHAM I Come on, let’s see the New Year in!' Let Nineteen Sixty-one begin! Don’t scorn the Occasion, it’s not trivial. • Go with the World, and be convivial. The Year swings open like a Door for us. And in we go! But what’s in Store for us? That’s not the Question, really, is it? The Future’s dumb, and you can’t quiz it What’s not yet happened is inscrutable. As what HAS happened is immutable. On New Year’s Eve, between the Pair of them, Future and Past we’re most aware of them: (I don’t know whether, in all Fairness, To call my State of Mind “awareness”!) And if we’re rowdy in our Revels, That is to scare off Time’s black Devils. We sing and dance, ring Bells, bang Drums, Not knowing What it is that comes: If it’s a Wave, we’ll ride the Crest of it (We hope!) if not. we’ll make the Best of it. Press on, you Jokers, towards Futurity. It may or may not bring Security. Tighten the Bootlace:-hoist the Pack! There lies the Road. There’s no Way back.
