ROMAN MAID’S FAST SPRINT IN TRAINING

An exceptional three ’furlongs on the plough by Roman Maid made the rest of the fast work over sprint distances at Riccarton yesterday look very ordinary.

The brilliant Summertime mare, which was led up to the top bend from her stablemate, William David, bounded keenly into her work as soon as she was released and dashed home in her usual effortless style in 34 2-ssec. She was ridden by R. B. Taggart.

Roman Maid will probably have her next race in the open sprint at Waikouaiti next Monday. She was successful in the corresponding race at the same meeting 12 months ago. The majority of local horses which were tried at speed will begin their holiday campaigns at the South Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting tomorrow. Among this group the best mile was credited to Hand Over, a candidate for the Christmas Handicap, and Surrend and Gay Tommy both shaped well over sev?n furlongs. Matauwhi (R. W. Gould) dashed over seven furlongs on the plough in Imin 29 3-ssec, the first half-mile in 52 2-ssec. He is fit for his holiday campaign. Hand Over (R. B. Taggart) and Rustic (L. J. Ellis) ran a sound mile in Imin 43 4-ssec, the last three furlongs in 38 l-ssec. Hand Over had a slight edge at the finis ll - „ Vestment Lady (T. I. Smith) recorded Imin 30 4-ssec in a smart run over • seven furlongs. She came the last three furlongs in 38 2-ssec. Bon Salut, which has drawn wide in the Smithfield Hack Handicap at Washdyke, sprinted home from the three furlongs in 36sec. He was ridden by R. W. Gould. Surrend (Miss F. Kerr) shaded Gay Tommy (W. Stradbroke, a candidate for the Smithfield Hack Handicap at Washdyke, ran the last three of six furlongs in 38 4-ssec. He was ridden by J. Leach. Panarn (W. H. Beck) ran six furlongs in Imin 20 4-ssec. The last half-mile took 52 2-ssec. Keep Time (W. H. Beck) dashed over three furlongs in 36 4-ssec. * Pay Out (R. McDonald) and Air View (R. W. Goulds ran together over half a mile. They finished on terms in 53 2-ssec. Sigurd. (M. Skelton) led Roa (R. McDonald) by half a length at the end of six furlongs in Imin 15 4-ssec, the last three furlongs in 38 2-ssec. Course Proper On the course proper, Pixie Girl (R. W. Gould) and Double Impress (L. N. McGuire) finished five furlongs together in Imin 5 3-ssec. The last four furlongs took 52 2-ssec. Thumper (R. W. Gould) and Kastanea (M. Wildermoth) went over seven furlongs in Imin 34sec. They finished together and ran the last half-mile in 52 3-ssec. Thumper is a candidate for the Timaru Cup on the second day at Washdyke. Kastanea will contest the Christmas Handicap tomorrow. Lord Nikita (L. J. Ellis) ran away from Portent (M. Wildermoth) over six furlongs, in Imin 21 2-ssec, the last half-mile in 53sec. Portent was disappointing. Polly Alonzo (R. W. Gould) beat Keep Quiet <W. H. Beck) easily by half a length at the end of half a mile. Polly Alonzo, which is in the Nursery Handicap at Washdyke, took 52 2-ssec. Questa Rose (D. J. Thistoll) worked over a distance, running home from the half-mile in 53 sec.
