CERTIFICATES OF BIRTH
N.Y. Drops Colour, Race Data (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) NEW YORK, December 26. New York would be the first city in the United States to eliminate information regarding a child’s colour or race from birth certificates, the city’s Health Commissioner (Dr. Leona Baumgartner) said today. Starting from January 1 the colour or race item would be relegated to the confidential medical record of each birth. That record was available only to public health workers for research and statistical purposes. Dr. Baumgartner said the action was taken in response to numerous complaints that colour or race information on birth certificates was used for purposes of discrimination against minority groups.
