Gusts Up To 120 i Miles An Hour (New Zealand Press Association) INVERCARGILL. Dec. 22. 1 The Puysegur Point lighthouse: received its second battering this year from winds of more than 100 miles an as a north-, westerly gale 'swept over South-; land today. Gusts of up to 120; miles an hour whipped up heavy seas which buffeted the light-; house. Throughout the remainder of the province, winds up to 60. miles an hour flattened exposed gardens and trees, and smashed windows. One of the worst-affected areas was Gore, where the roof was torn off the Gore Cricket Club pavilion, and the newly-erected framework of a house was car-, ried away. Power lines in the: town also suffered, and in some, parts electricity were! disrupted from 6.10 a.m. to 10 a.m. | Air services to and from In-i vercargill airport were stopped. | upsetting passenger schedules at! the busiest time of the year. Pas-’ sengers were taken by road. At Bluff, cargo work on the! New Zealand Star was held up, for a short time when the wind! tossed the slings about. Huge seas were runping in. Foveaux Strait, and two of the! three telephone lines which join) a cable to Stewart Island were | broken. I The winds in Invercargill, averaged 35 to 40 miles an hour., with a maximum gust of 60 miles an hour at 11.45 a.m.
