HARBOUR SEARCH AT AUCKLAND
Heavy Object Thrown Into Water (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, Dec. 15. The police launch Lady Shirley spent more than an hour and a half tonight searching the water on the harbour side of* the Western viaduct for a heavy object thrown off the viaduct about 8.45 p.m.. No trace of the object was found,. A diver may be sent down to investigate tomorrow. Mr John Harvey, who lives aboard the ketch Lady Anne, moored inside the lighter basin, informed the police about 9 o’clock.
“I heard a loud splash as though a 13st man had been thrown into the water,” Mr Harvey said later. “I clambered up on to the viaduct and saw a van parked on the northern side of the roadway near the edge of the viaduct.” Mr Harvey could see nothing when he looked over the side. As soon as he had gone back on to his boat the van was driven off at high speed. Mr Harvey said there was one person in the driver’s seat, and a man was standing on the seaward side of the vehicle when he went on to the viaduct
