CHRISTMAS TREE THEFTS

Reserves Staff On Look-out

City Council reserves department staff are on the watch for tree thieves and Mr H. G. Gilpin, the Director of Reserves, says that if any are caught they will be prosecuted. Last year a few trees were stolen for Christmas trees, but the thefts were not as numerous as in previous years, and Mr Gilpin hopes that this year there will be even fewer.

There was no need for theft, as Christmas trees were readily available from many places, Mr Gilpin says. The City Council itself sells thinnings for Christmas trees, but not to individuals. Some are sold to merchants for resale, but most go to charitable organisations which sell the trees for their own funds.
