AMERICAN JOURNEYS TO THE SOUTH POLE.—Two American traverse parties are now on their way to the South Pole, one from McMurdo Sound following for part of the way the route pioneered by Sir Edmund Hillary, and the other from Byrd station in Marie Byrd Land. TOP: One of the snocats of the scientific party led by Mr A. P. Crary beginning its 1400mile journey from McMurdo on December 10. It is towing a roili-trailer. Each of the tyres holds 500 gallons of fuel, and the frame slung between them carries supplies and equipment. BOTTOM: A 37-ton tractor starting the 800-mile journey from Byrd station.
