NO AMENDMENT TO OBSCENITY LAWS
British Government Rejects Bid (N.Z. Press Association— Copyright) LONDON. Dec. 14. The British Government tonight refused to consider amending the obscenity laws to ban writings such as D. H. Lawrence’s “Lady Chatterley’s Lover.” This had been urged in the HouSe of Lords by Lord Teviot, an 86-year-old Scottish peer, who said the book "emanated from a warped mind." Lord Teviot said true love was being undermined. If love was abused it became “the work of Satan, indecent and quite dreadful." But. the Lord President of the Council (Lord Hailsham) said it wa.; unthinkable to amend a new Act of Parliament on the ground of a single verdict.
