CRICKET NORTH CANTERBURY IN GOOD POSITION
After dismissing Hurunui for 150, North Canterbury placed itself in a strong position by scoring 243 runs in 195 minutes in the first day of a Sub-associa-tion’s Shield match at Waiau yesterday. With the outfield slow, batsmen were lifting |he ball to speed up the scoring and this resulted in 13 players being caught
Although North Canterbury has a comfortable lead, Hurunui provided some bright moments Among these was a fine last wicket partnership by B. Davison and J. Gardner, the last two men in. Between them they added 40, both hitting hard and confidently. T. McGowan -batted well with a top score of 32, his only lapse being when bowled off his pad by C. Merrin. The most successful Hurunui bowler was W. Cann, who took the last three wickets in the last over of the day, without any addition to the score. From 3 p.m. he bowled 20 eight-ball
overs, 15 of them without t change and finished with seven wickets for 87. The North Canterbury bowlers were steady with four of them sharing the wickets. The batsmen were severe on anything short, especially M. Logan/ who hooked effectively to score his 42 which included five fours and a six. Six of the. side scored between 25 and 46, with C. Merrin the top scorer.
It is evident that Hurunui will need to improve its fielding if it is to challenge North Canterbury when the match is concluded today. Logan was dropped three times and several others were dropped early in their innings. Neither side was at full strength. North Canterbury was probably worse affected by the absence of some of its senior players. Scores'.— HURUNUI , , First Innings J. Macfarlane, c R. Hopkins, b J. McCrennor .. .. 7 K.
