Variety Concert For Christmas

The Christmas party of the Canterbury Justices o£ the Peace Association last evening was a variety concert. About 270 members attended. Guests were received by the president (Mr L- C. Fulford) and Mrs Fulford Mr Fulford wore his presidential insignia and chain over his suit. Mrs Fulford chose a short frock of ruby red satin brocade, which she wore with bone accessories and a fur stole.

Specially-invited guests included the patron of the association (Mr Justice Richmond) and Mrs Richmond; the vice-patrons, Mr Raymond Ferner, S.M.. and Mrs Ferner, and Mr E. A. Lee, S.M., and Mrs Lee; the newly-appointed superintendent of police (Mr C L. Spencer) and Mrs Spencer; the deputy-superintendent of police (Mr E. J. C. Hay) and Mrs Hav; the chief clerk of the court <Mr O. T. Grattan) and Mrs Grattan. Pink hydrangeas and ferns decorated the stage for the concert, which was compered by Mr Dudley Wilson. Incidental music was provided by Mrs Maisie McNair. The items were as follows;—Cornet trio, Messrs D. Christianson. T Bremner. H Davis; vocal solo. Miss Maria Sutherland; ventriloquist. Mr C Day; vocal solo, Mr Anson Austin; elocution. Mrs B. B Woods: harmonica selection. Stavemasters’ Harmonica Ensemble. Community singing was led by Mr Arthur Martin. The artists were thanked by Mr R. Harris.

Overseas League.—More than 100 guests attended a combined Christmas cocktail party given by members of the Royal Overseas League recently with members of the Twentieth Century Group. The party was held in the Royal Overseas League rooms and marked the end of the celebrations for the league’s golden jubilee year Guests were received by Mrs A. S Bailey and were led in carol singing by members of the drama group of the league After the party, members of the Twentieth Century Group stayed on for a dance. For the occasion the rooms were decorated with Christmas lilies and other flowers, silver candelabra holding red candles and a Christmas tree. Business and Professional Women.—Carol singing was included in a varied programme organised for the Christmas party of the Christchurch Federated Business and Professional Women’s Club recently, by the convener of the party committee (Mrs H Reeve). More than 50 guests attended. The vice-presi-dent (Mrs N. Mclntosh) made a presentation to a club member. Miss Nita McDowell, who wilj be married in February. The guests were welcomed by the president (Miss S Lilly). Mrs Reeve thanked the artists, among whom were Mrs A. Ledsham (songs) Mrs O. Gee (recitations) and Mrs N. Sherris (songs) Mrs Ledsham spoke of her visits to theatres in England Presents were distributed from a Christmas tree.

West of England Women.—An innovation was seen at the West of England Women’s Association Christmas party. It was a huge chimney stack in the middle of the hall, from which gifts were distributed by Father Christmas. The oresident ’Mrs M. Logan) presided and welcomed about 40 guests Specially-invited guests included he Mayoress of Christchurch (Mrs G. Manning). Entertainment was provided by a concert party under the leadership of Mrs H. Reeve. Items were given by the following:—Vocal solos. Mrs Eva Fulton and Miss K. Mangels; vocal duets, Mesdames K. Swallow and E. Williams; piano duets, Mesdames R. Burrowes and H. Reeve; elocution, Mrs O. Gee. The accompanist was Mrs H. Reeve. Bowls of flowers decorated the stage and the long tables set for a party tea.
