GOOD PERFORMANCES AT RANGIORA MEETING

Although entries were not quite so numerous as in previous years, there were some excellent performances at the inter-cluib athletic meeting held by the Rangiora club at the Rangiora High School grounds as part of the town’s annual Festivity Week activities. One of the feature races of the evening was the junior mile in which two 17-year-old runners fought out the distance. The former Christ’s College athlete, P. Hewlett, having his first run for University, won the event in 4min 32.35ec after being strongly challeged by A. Dyer, Rangiora, in the final lap. An under 17 Toe H representative, M. Walls, had a most satisfying series of events, winning four and being second in another. Amongst these successes, he had the satisfaction of beating the Canterbury junior 100 yards representative, T. Pateman (Technical), in 10.7 sec. His other wins were the junior high jump with sft 9in, the long jump with 18ft 4Jin, and the under 17 75 yards in Bsec. In the junior 310 yards hurdles he was second to R. Thompson (High Schools), whose time was 26.55ec.

Having only his second competitive run of the season the New Zealand junior two mile champion, J. (Power (Rangiora) showed he is in fine fettle by winning the senior three-quarter mile handicap from scratch In 3min lOsec. Another fine effort in this race was that of D. M. Taylor (University), who took second place from scratch in 3min 12.7 sec. Also competing in open com-

petition for the second tune this season, the New Zealand junior 220 yards title holder, A. Steele (High Schools) gain a narrow decision in the senior 100 yards in 10.2 sec, a good time on the up hill track. In the women’s events J. Beaton (Toe H) recorded a good double. She won the senior high jump with 4ft 10:n and the under 16 long jump with 15ft Bin. Although the Festivity Week activities are sponsored by the Rangiora Businessmen’s Association the profits from the various activities are retained by the individual clubs and after the meeting expenses the athletic dub is expected to benefit by more than £lO.
