TROTTING Rangiora Cup Could Go To Orient Night

Orient Night, a place-getter in five of her nine starts this season, should gain an overdue win in the Rangiora Cup, the main race and first leg of the double at the Rangiora Trotting Club’s annual meeting to be held at the New Brighton racecourse tomorrow.

Orient Night was a solid finisher for second to the speedy Urrall in the iD-furlong Empire Handicap at New Brighton a fortnight ago. The extra six furlongs in this race should not worry her and if W. R. Butt can keep her covered up until the last furlong, she should outsprint most of her rivals.

Highland Custom has raced consistently thia season for two wins and four placings from eeven starts. The daughter of Brahman and Riviera looks very well at present and after her third to Urrall and Orient Night at New Brighton recently, she must be considered seriously. Schnapps is one of the most consistent pacers in this class. He has been once unplaced from eight starts and is long overdue' for a win. He must be given a great chance of finishing in the money once more. Radiant Hanover was having his fiijst fltart for the season when he won the Waimate Cup last Saturday. He will be meeting much sterner apposition in this field, but he should be an improved horse. Massacre. Grouse, Jimmy Grattan and Heathmount are others capable of adding interest to the finish. King Hal Selected King Hal, runner-up to Student Prince in the New Zealand Derby Stakes at his most recent start, is selected to win the Rangiora Challenge Stakes, the second leg of the double. King Hal won the Riccarton Stakes after starting from 24 yards on the first day of the cup meeting and he will start from the same mark tomorrow. He is to race at Auckland during the holidays and if he is to have a chance in the Great Northern Derby Stakes, he will have to make a bold showing here. Jolly Hal, a disappointment at the cup meeting last month, will be bracketed with King Hal. Happy Hunting, which has had a third and a win in his two starts this season, gave a dashing display at the trials last Monday at Addington. This smart four-year-old looks to be on the improve and it will not surprise if he wins. Adios Heather made amends for her failure in the New Zealand Oaks when she won the Hoi I’Or Stakes at Waimate last Saturday. Adios Heather is inclined to be erratic, but once under way she has plenty of ability. If she makes a smooth beginning, she should be too good ■ for most in this field. Consistent Summit Road has been most consistent in recent weeks, but a win seems to be beyond him. He had his chance at Waimate last week, but was well beaten by Adios Heather. If he can be kept in behind until the final furlong, he could upset calculations. Gold Globe was runner-up to a smart pacer in Robin Dundee in the New Zealand Oaks. That was only her second race start and she should be improved. She looks a useful type of filly. Caimbrae, a winner at his last two starts last season, will be making a fresh start. If he is forward enough, he could be capable of a bold showing and along with Van Rebeck, No Com-

ment and Wekin he appeals most of the remainder. Fine weather is expected on Saturday, when the track should be In perfect order. Double fields, with form, are:— RANGIORA CUP.
