POLICE MURDERS AT CATO MANOR

Population Hostile Says Judge (N.Z. Press Association— Copyright) DURBAN, December 14. A judge of the Durban Supreme Court, giving judgment on the murder of nine policemen in Cato Manor African township last January 24, said today the Court was satisfied a large part of the township’s population was hostile to the police. The judge (Mr Justice James) has found 18 of 26 accused nonwhites guilty, and acquitted eight. Five of the convicted are juveniles. Sentences are to be pronounced tomorrow. The judge said hostility to police was “undoubtedly a very real thing.” “If it had not been, it is inconceivable that a trival incident such as the accidental tramping on the foot of a woman, who then refused to accept an apology ar.d became hysterical, could have set in train a series of events which led to the brutal murder of nine policemen,” he said.
