“Stevenson Will Have Key Role” NEW YORK. December 14 Mr Dean Rusk, the next United States Secretary of "State, said today that Mr Adlai Stevenson would play a key role in formulation of United States foreign policy in the incoming Democratic Administration. Mr Stevenson, who has been named United States Ambassador to the United Nations, and Mr Rusk appeared together at a press conference in Mr Stevenson’s New York law offices today after conferring on their tactics as foreign policy planners in President-elect John Kennedy’s Cabinet. Mr Rusk said he faced formidable responsibilities in taking over as Secretary of State, but he found his courage reinforced by the knowledge that Mr Stevenson had been selected as United Nations Ambassador for the United States.

“We expect him to play a key role in the formulation of foreign policy in Washington.” Mr Rusk said. “We want to get the full benefit of Governor Stevenson’s counsels in foreign policy.” Mr Stevenson, twice defeated as the Democratic Presidential candidate, said the new Administration would stand determined to “preserve, defend and strengthen the United Nations.” Mr Rusk said he planned to consult frequently with Mr Stevenson and that it was vita! for the head of the Unite-’ Nations mission and the head of the State Department to form an “effective working team.”
