WATER SUPPLY IN HALSWELL

Loan Will Re Necessary

Although the Halswell County Council was one of the few in New Zealand without any loan debts, the chairman (Mr H. Cox) warned councillors last evening that it would be necessary in the near future to raise a loan for the supply of high-pressure water and sewers in the built-up area of the county. What the extent of the loan would be was not yet known, he said. Plans fof the sewer work were in the course of preparation by the council’s consulting engineers and when they were to hand, application would be made to the Local Authorities’ Loans Board for sanction to raise the loan.

An impression of the way Halswell was developing could be gained from the value and number of building permits issued during the year when 196 permits to a value of £298,101 were issued. Since the last monthly meeting, 36 permits valued at £71,105 had been issued, said Mr Cox.

Building figures in the previous year were valued at £209,089, and the increase this year had been mainly brought about by the dedication of part of Santa Rosa avenue and Cobra street and the subsequent erection of dwellings, added to the development of the last portion of Scott’s subdivision. Six shops had also been erected at the corner of Sparks road and Paterson avenue, he said. New Council Chambers

Mr Cox said that plans for new office and council chambers had been prepared by Mr P. J. Beaven. The erection of the building, he said, would fill a long awaited need as the council’s office staff had for years worked under cramped conditions.

The sketch plan of the proposed building was tabled for councillors to inspect. Estimated to cost £6OOO, the building would be constructed of glass, concrete block and timber. “It will certainly be a more economic type of building than has been built by any other local body,” said Cr. G. Van Asch. The council deferred making a decision to go ahead with the building until all aspects had been more closely examined.
