HOLIDAYS AT CHRISTMAS
Few Awards With Third Day
Only seven awards operating in the Christchurch district provide the day after Boxing Day as a holiday. Two of them also give three days' holiday at New Year. ,
The awards cover local body employees in the main and some clerical workers, but does not include the general clerical workers’ award, which follows the practice in the industry to which the workers are attached. Two awards in Christchurch have a “floating” holiday provided which may be added to the Christmas and Boxing Day holidays by agreement if it has not already been taken. In some parts of New Zealand a “floating” holiday is given in lieu of the provincial anniversary day, but the general practice in Christchurch is to have Show Day in lieu of Canterbury’s anniversary day on December 16. By the Public Holidays Act, 1955, Christmas Day and Boxing Day will be observed on Monday and Tuesday this year as the actual Christmas Day is a Sunday. Similarly, New Year’s Day will be observed for holiday purposes on Monday, January 2.
