McFarlane shield

Win For Ouruhia School

The McFarlane Shield was presented to the Ouruhia school, Marshlands, by Mrs C. C. Holland, a member of the Canterbury Education Board, at the school’s concert held last evening.

The shield, which is competed for by all primary schools in the Canterbury district, is awarded annually to the school with the best garden and environment and the highest standard of nature study. It was first awarded in 1917.

Under the guidance of Mr R. Armstrong, head teacher and Miss M. F. Atkinson, teacher, the 41 pupils of the school have looked after their flower and vegetable garden and shrubbery plot in the two acres and a half of the school ground. The only country school to which students from the Teachers’ College are sent for training, the school has won the shield twice previously.
