U-2’s OVER ALGERIA
Soviet Charge Denied NEW YORK, December 13. The United States today denied a Soviet charge that American U-2 aircraft were being used in reconnaissance missions over Algerian positions. The Soviet Deputy Foreign Minister (Mr Valerin Zorin) said in the United Nations main Political Committee debate on Algeria that U-2’s were being used in photographic missions over rebel positions and that United Statesmade bombs were being dropped on the insurgents. Shortly afterwards, the State Department spokesman (Mr Lincoln White) said in reply to a question that the United States representative at the United Nations “will inform Mr Zorin of what is fact and what are Mr Zorin’s dreams.” Mr Zorin said no-one now dared assert that Algeria was" the internal affair of France. It was a burning international problem. At least 800,000 Algerians had lost their lives in the conflict. This “shameful encounter” was supported by France’s allies in N.A.T.O. The campaign could not have continued if it had not been for the support of these allies, particularly the United States.
