OIL IN HARBOUR AT WELLINGTON
Master Of Waipawa Fined £l5O (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, December 9. The master of the Waipawa, Edward Ernest Smaith, was convicted and fined £l5O and costs when he pleaded guilty through counsel (Mr S. G. Lockhart) in the Magistrate’s Court at Wellington today before Mr J. B. Thompson, S.M., to a charge of allowing oil to escape into Wellington harbour on November 12. Mr Lockhart said the oil had been in bilge water which was being transferred, and had not been a large amount.
