MENZIES ON WEST NEW GUINEA
Nationalist Partv Paper Criticised (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) JAKARTA, December 9. The Australian Prime Minister (Mr Menzies) was sharply criticised today in the official newspaper of the Nationalist Party of President Soekarno for his comments on West New Guinea, British United Press reported. Mr Menzies said last Tuesday in Parliament that he favoured self-determination for the people of West New Guinea. He said he did not believe Indonesian claims that the Dutch might start a war there. He also said the New Guinea issue was potentially dangerous, because of the Indonesian attitude, the agency report said. The leading article in “Suluh Indonesia" today said to Mr Menzies: “Do not deceive yourself. “You can speak terrifying words about oppression in Hungary and in -Tibet, because both places are far removed from Australia’s interests, but you speak . . . while people of West Irian (West New Guinea) are being oppressed right under your own nose. “You even belittle the people and leaders of Indonesia who want to fight for their own people who are still living under oppression.”
