Motor-Racing RAIN STOPS MEETING

Trophy Races At Ardmore (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, December 11. Rain washed out the final events at the Auckland trophy motor races at Ardmore on Saturday afternoon. Ten races of the scheduled 13-race programme were completed, the last two in almost solid rain. Drivers were almost blinded as the cars ploughed through water on a track almost hidden in spray. Many of the 4000 spectators were thoroughly soaked and left the circuit before the organisers, the Auckland Car Club, made the decision to abandon the rest of the meeting. Earlier, in orier conditions, the Te Puke driver, D. Hulme, showed the benefit of his season in overseas competition. He gave a polished driving display in winning the major race of the day, the 20-mile N.Z.I.G.P. president’s trophy, 10 laps of the full circuit. After taking the lead at the start of the second lap, Hulme never looked like making a mistake. His time was 15min 3.6 sec. He finished 9sec ahead of M. Gill, whose improved Lycoming Special could not quite hold the Cooper. Presenting the race trophy to Hulme, the president of the Grand Prix organisation (Mr W. H. Knox) said Hulme had shown the value of the organisation’s “driver to Europe” scheme.
