Athletics Triangular Meeting Won By Canterbury

» .Greater strength in the senior i division enabled Canterbury to beat Otago and Southland in the , annual triangular athletic meeting at Rugby Park on Saturday. ’ Otago junior athletes performed particularly well, winning 10 of • the 16 events. The Otago women won five of the 10 events. , Canterbury scored 195 points against Otago’s 157 and South- • land’s 35. The points in each division were: Senior, Canterbury . 79. Otago 46. Southland 25; junior, • Canterbury .71, Otago 67. South- . land 10; women, Canterbury 45. Otago 44. Southland 0. The track was soft and spongy ’ after almost 10 days of rain, but . good times were recorded in both « sprint and distance events. Surface conditions did not affect the ‘ field events, and it was in this . section that a new Canterbury re- ■ cord was established. Miss V. Sloper, who was in remarkably good form, threw the discus 170 ft 6sin which was 3ft 51in better than her previous best distance. In the shot put, too. Miss Sloper recaptured her best form and her winning throw of 54ft 4] in was a fine early-season effort. In Miss Sloper’s three throws her least successful was 53ft Sgin. giving her an average which she has probably never before reached after two months of competition. Senior Three Miles There were plenty of thrilling finishes with inches occasionally separating the place-getters, but because it called for so much determination the senior three miles will be long remembered. It was a distinguished field with J. K. Macdonald (Canterbury). T. Marshall and A. Potts • « Otago), D. Dixey (Southland), and K. Williams (Nelson), who was appearing as a guest runner. Marshall in the first lap set a fast pace and at the end of the first quarter, competed in 63sec. he was leading Williams. Potts. Macdonald and Dixey. The pace proved too fast and first Potts and then Williams dropped slowly back. . Marshall retained the lead, but Macdonald, his long, graceful stride contrasting with the leader’s * short, quick action, kept only a few yards behind until the bell rang for the last lap, Marshall spurted, and Macdonald seemed to accept the widening distance with resignatidn, but then he challenged and gradually drew ahead. At the turn into the straight he was a good 20 yards in front with Marshall struggling to prevent the gap from widening. Macdonald was not distressed by his -win, and his time of 14min 13.2 sec was one of the fastest three miles run at Rugby Park for several years and only 7.2 sec outside the seven-year record of J. Daly. Marshall was . only 3.2 sec behind Macdonald and Potts, who finished the race as if It were a sprint, was about 150 yards behind Marshall. Dixey Wins Mile Dixey did not seem to have his heart in the three miles, but he could be excused after his excellent win earlier in the mile in 4min 15.8 sec. This was Dixey’s second best time for this distance and more than 9sec ahead of his best this season. Dixey did well to hold off Potts in the last sprint and even though Potts gained a yard or two he left his run too late. Potts’s time was 4min 16.3 sec. D. Mackenzie (Canterbury), in his first season as a senior, won both the 100 yards and 220 yards in 102 sec and 22.65ec. with his club-mate, R. Burgess, only a yard behind in each race. G. Hack (Canterbury) ran his first 440 yards of the season and won it after a keen tussle with B. H. Kerr (Canterbury) over the last 50 yards Hack’s time of 50.7 sec was quite good on the holding track. Kerr returned 51sec, which gave him second place five yards ahead of Otago’s C. Maguire. The evergreen A. (5. Lawless (Otago) won both the 120 yards and 220 yards hurdles, but in the longer race he headed off P. Cates, of Canterbury. only in the last stride. Cates, who has done little training this season, lasted the distance particularly well and was in front by two feet the last hurdle. But in the dash for the tape Lawless just headed him off. Both were given the time of 25.35ec and both were well satisfied with it. L. Heenan (Southland) won the senior shot with the good distance of 49ft sin, nearly 4ft 6in ahead of R. Tait, of Otago. Tait won the discus with 155 ft 4Jin, and D. Williams (Southland) comfortably *took first place in the hammer throw with 150 ft Sin. G. Wilson (Canterbury) had an easy win in the 15-mile road race. He finished full of life in the time of Ihr 23min 33sec, 12 minutes in front of I. Clifford (Canterbury), in second place. Junior Section Otago fielded a talented group in the junior section, especially B. Bulfin. who won the 100 yards and 220 yards in 10.2 sec and 22.8 sec; B. Fox, who won the 440 yards in 50.8 sec; E. Maguire, who held off a strong challenge by A. Bayard (Canterbury) to win the mile in 4min 32.1 sec; and W. Spiers, who won the high jump at sft Ilin. J. Mclntosh (Canterbury) was not far short off the junior provincial hop, step and jump record. with 44ft 7Jin, and the promising M. Stewart (Canterbury) beat J. Sampson (Canterbury) by a foot only in the javelin with 184 ft 7Jin. Miss M. Chamberlain (Canterbury) was beaten into second place in the 100 yards By Miss N. Bond, of Otago, but Miss Chamberlain won the 220 yards and 440 yards. Miss Bond, who is better suited to the shorter sprints, contested the 440 yards, but she lacked the stamina to keep up with Miss Chamberlain over the last 100 yards. Several inter-club events were • held as well, and J. Power and A.

Steel, two of Canterbury’s outstanding athletes last season, made their first appearances. Steel easily . won the 100 yards in 10.3 sec, and Pow r er raced through a tiring field in the half-mile in Imin 59.35ec. Results:— SENIOR 100 Yards.—D. MacKenzie (C.), 10.2, 1; R.
