Crossbreds Down 2 1 ½% At Invercargill Sale

(New Zealand Press Association)

INVERCARGILL, Dec. 11. Good wools commanded good prices, but, over-all, there was an absence of strength in the bidding at the wool sale in Invercargill on Saturday. The sale opened about 2*. per cent, cheaper than last week’s Christchurch sale and eased more during the day. It was the second sale of the Invercargill wool season. There were a number of passings—more it was said than for some years at an Invercargill sale. Ewe and hogget wools, particularly, weakened as the sale progressed. The tendency was most noticeable in hogget wools of which there was a large offering and apparently limited competition. Several bales of super fine crossbred woolly hogget brought 53}d, but wool with any tenderness was much below that. The top lines brought more than at Invercargill in October, but the “bread-and-butter” wools finished at about the prices ruling here then. The quality of the offering of 33,400 bales was good compared with previous December sales at Invercargill. Wools were generally sound in staple. The prompt date for the sale is December 28. The next sale at Invercargill will be on February 22 and 24 when the offering will be 52,000 bales. The official report issued by

the Invercargill Woolbrokers’ Association, the Woolbuyers’ Association and the Wool Commission said: “In general, the bulk of the wool, which included a fair selection of woolly hoggets, opened up well, there being an absence of weather staining which was prevalent at the October sale. At the same time there was still a fair amount of muddy oddments. “The market showed an easing tendency and at the close of the sale fleece prices generally could be quoted 2J per cent, down on recent rates. Prices for oddments were in buyers’ favour. “Continental buyers took the shorter wools and oddments and the United Kingdom operated on the woolly hoggets and longer stapled fleeces. As usual, American interests concentrated on the coarse fleece, while Japan showed most interest in the Southdown types.”
