Australia Three For 196 In Reply To West Indies

(N.Z. Press Association—-Copyright) BRISBANE, December 11. The Australian opening batsman, C. McDonald, today took a body battering as his team began its long struggle to overtake the West Indies’ total of 453 in the first test match.

McDonald was knocked to the ground twice by bumpers from the fast bowler, W. Hall. A crowd of about 16.000 saw Australia reach three for 196 at stumps in a fight against the West Indies pace bowlers. Hall, Worrell and Sobers. The slow scoring contrasted ■with the brilliant West Indies innings, which ended this morning. The West Indies carried its overnight total from seven for 359 to 453 in 85 minutes. It was the West Indies’ highestever score against Australia in a test in this country. G. Alexander (60) and W. Hall (50) shared in a spirited partnership that produced 69 runs, including many boundary shots. The pair launched such a devastating attack on the bowling that they took 39 runs from I. Meckiff’s only three overs. The Australian captain, R. Benaud. finished with none for 93 off 24 overs. The Australian bowlers this morning took 85 minutes to dismiss the last West Indies batsmen. In that time the West Indies added an invaluable 94 runs. Early Success The Australians had an early success when Davidson dismissed Ramadhin for 12. The Australians were without L. Kline, who left the field after two overs, to have a throat infection examined. Alexander and Hall registered thme West Indies’ 450 in 439 minutes. The new ball only meant an

acceleration ot the West Indies’ scoring rate. Benaud called in Kline, who had returned after a doctor had examined him and Kline immediately broke the partnership. Hall groped forward, missed a legspinner and Grout whipped off the bails—his fifth dismissal of the innings. The end came three balls later. Alexander tried for a prodig, ious hit off Kline but skied the ball into the hands of Davidson. Scores were:—
