Water Polo Canterbury Beats Otago 9-4 To Win Miller Trophy

**The Press” Special Service

DUNEDIN. December 11. Canterbury won the Miller trophy for the first time when it defeated Otago in the interprovincial water polo match at Dunedin on Saturday by 9 goals to 5. Otago put up somewhat surprising opposition, but the concluding stages of the game saw the superior fitness and better combination of the Canterbury men too difficult to counter. Canterbury went into an early lead before Otago settled and Schout scored 2 goals up in surprisingly quick time. Playing with cohesion, and with McNeilage ably directing operations. Canterbury put the pressure on the Otago goalkeeper but he weathered the storm. The younger and less experienced Otago team put up a stout resist-

ance and after Leach and Ludwig scored goals the scoreboard at half-time was 4-2 in favour of Canterbury. Otago started off briskly in the second spell and when Leach was apparently fouled, he still had time to throw a quick one from close to the goal mouth. A misunderstanding between the Otago full-back and goalkeeper occurred and Chambers was quick on to the ball to score. But Broughton immediately retaliated. With the score at 5-4, excitement ran high, but Chambers again scored two goals with hard backhanders when he beat Paape. With Doubleday out of the water, Canterbury pressed home and from good positional" play Roake netted a grand goal, but Ludwig and Leach combined well for the latter to score. Chambers scored the final goal with a hard shot when the Otago defence was tiring. For Canterbury, goals were scored by Schout <2), Henry. McNeilage. Roake and Chambers <4). Leach (3), Ludwig and Broughton scored for Otago. At the Otago championships, J. McGuinness broke the Otago 220 yards record with a time of 2min 15.8 sec, which is only l.Bsec outside W. Amos’s New Zealand record. Breaststroke Record Miss Dunlop broke the Otago record with a 78.8 sec 100 yards breaststroke swim, but the big surprise was Miss H. Robert who. in her first competitive swim over the distance this season, recorded 82sec. This must have caused the Otago selectors some soul-searching as they overlooked her in the nominations for the New Zealand team and it is extremely doubtful if any of the other three nominations can match her times this season.
