Burnham Appointment

Next Month

Colour - Sergeant D. v B. Slocombe, of Christchurch, who gained top place at the Officer Cadet School, Portsea, Australia, will arrive at Burnham Military Camp as a second lieutenant in January on a posting to the New Zealand Regiment. Colour-Sergeant Slocombe was presented with the Governor General’s medal on Thursday by Major-General G. W. Harrison, the first commandant of the

school. It also marked the second year in succession that the top place among graduates at Portsea has been filled by a New Zealand cadet. In addition, he won the field prize for the highest aggregate in outdoor militry subjects, and the staff prize for the highest aggregate in indoor military subjects. Sergeant Slocombe gained 6133 marks out of a possible 7550, including 96 per cent., for leadership. After leaving Papanui High School, Sergeant Slocombe attended the Regular Force Cadet School. He later joined the Regular Force and served in Malaya with the Ist Battalion, New Zealand Regiment. He was a lancecorporal when selected for Portsea.

Another New Zealander who graduated was Sergeant T. K. D. Reynish, a pupil at the Hokitika District High School before he joined the Regular Force cadets. Like Sergeant Slocombe he also served in Malaya with the Ist Battalion, New Zealand Regiment, and became a lance-corporal.
