CRICKET Nelson Leading Taranaki In Hawke Cup Challenge
(New Zealand Press Association)
NELSON, December 9. Nelson took a first innings lead over the challengers, Taranaki, when the first Hawke Cup cricket match of the season opened at Trafalgar Park today. Batting first, Taranaki scored 164, and at stumps Nelson in reply was 207 for eight wickets. It was a day of tense cricket. With batting strength all the way down the order, Nelson seemed likely to overhaul Taranaki’s total without much trouble, but against a strong attack, mainly medium-paced, the Nelson batsmen struggled for runs during the afternoon. The top scorer was the Central Districts recruit, B. Congdon, with a fine 38. B. Carey and R. Leeds had an unbroken partnership of 53 during the last hour when the Taranaki bowling tired. The best of the Taranaki bowlers was D. Yardley, who attacked the stumps to take four for 49. Scores: TARANAKI First Innings T. Dravitzki, lbw, b Bloomfield 4 A. R. Blair, b Leggat .. 13 E. M.
