Junior Table Tennis

The Canterbury Table Tennis Association has every reason to be pleased with its first junior tournament, which was held last week. Both the number of entries and the standard of the play fully justified the experiment of holding such a tournament in the offseason, when most of the players are more interested in other sports. In the under-21 boys’ section four intermediate players, K. J. Cassidy, R. B. McCallum, B. G. Kendall and A. Alabaster, all showed ability which makes them a danger to the senior representatives. The four members of this year’s Canterbury under-18 team, D. J. Kalin, D. Mcßride, M. Coppen and L. H. E. Freeman, also competed in this section with success. Competition in the under-21 girls’ section was better than expected. This section was expected to see an. easy win for Miss Y. Hart, a Canterbury senior representative against Otago this season. However, the form of Miss D. Bates (Papanui) gave added interest. Miss Bates has not played seriously for two seasons, but she pressed Miss Hart to a close match in the final. Of the younger players R. Inns. K. Rich. Miss J- Rich and Miss J. Goodchap won the under-17 and under-15 titles, and G. Saunders the under-13 boys’ event. Miss Rich is already a provincial junior representative, and the others should attain this honour within the next two seasons.
