CHRISTMAS PARTIES

Townswomen’s Guild. St. Stephen's Church hall was filled to capacity when the Shirley Townswomen’s Guild celebrated its fourth Christmas party. Blue delphiniums, red roses. Shasta daisies, and Christmas lilies, together with bowls of summer pastel flowers were artistically arranged and grouped around the stage. The singing circle, trained by Mrs D. Chatfield, sang “Songs of the Commonwealth” with Miss M. Waugh's dancing pupils. Anita Reeves with her banjo, sketches by the drama group and the first appearance of the guild's "marching girls” made varied and enjoyable entertainment. During the evening special presentations were made to Mrs D. Chatfield and Mrs J. Watson for their work

with the singing and drama groups. Special guests were welcomed by the president (Mrs C. Plumridge'i, and included the Dominion secretary (Mrs R. H. Smith), a member of the Christchurch Area Federation executive (Mrs J. Steimetz). and representatives from other townswomen's guilds.

Young Contingent.— The gardens of Elizabeth House were floodlit for the Christmas dance held by the Young Contingent of the Victoria League in Canterbury. An illuminated Christmas tree in the foyer and a nativity tableau were features of the decorations. Members of the organising committee were Misses M. Round. J. Ward. J. Blunden. H. Galvin. D. Fulton. A. Smith. Messrs R K. Godfrey, J. B Stringer. J. Wilson. R. Leckie. B Clarke, R. Skellerup. T. Wallace Guests were received by Mr R. K. Godfrey.

Aged Persons. — About 200 aged persons, many of whom through various circumstances had not been to a party for many years, met recently for a Christmas party in the Knox Presbyterian Church hall. For one of the women present it was the first time she had been out of her home for seven years. The party was arranged by the staff and
