YOUTHS’ APPEALS ALLOWED
Sentences Imposed By Children’s Court
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, December 9. What are believed to be the first appeals brought against sentences imposed by the Children’s Court were heard by Mr Justice Boys in the Supreme Court at Auckland today. The appallants three youths, two aged 16 and one 17, had been sentenced to Borstal training after being convicted of breaking and entering a-shop with intent to commit theft.
His Honour allowed the appeals and admitted the three youths to probation for two years, ordering each to pay £l5 towards the cost of the prosecution, to abstain from drinking alcohol, not to drive without the permission of the probation officer, and not to associate with one another. Mr S. A. Cleal, for the Crown, said recent amendment to the Child Welfare Act had made the appeals possible.
