ARMY SERVICE TO END
Major A. E. Lawrence » To Retire After completing 24 years’ service With the Royal New Zealand Army Corps, the present Deputy-Assistant-Adjutant - General at Southern Military District Headquarters (Major A. E. M. Lawrence) will retire at the end of the month. His successor will be Major R. D. Yetton, formerly with the New Zealand Regiment at Burnham Military Camp. Educated at Timaru Boys’ High School, Major Lawrence enlisted in the Regular Force as a private in 1937. He went overseas during World War II with the 23rd Battalion of the 2nd N.Z.E.F. In July, 1941, he was commissioned. While overseas Major Lawrence served in North Africa and Italy, and was a member of J Force in Japan in 1946 before he returned to New Zealand in September of that year. Since arriving back in the Dominion Major Lawrence has held a number of appointments including staff officer duties at Southern Military District Headquarters, administration officer at Waiouru, and chief instructor at the Regular Force depot, Army Schools. He took up his present appointment in March, 1958.
