Examination Results
As announced previously, the University of Canterbury decided to publish university examination results for 1960 in bulk. The earliest date by which it was expected this could be done was December 19. Most of the results have, however, now been accumulated, and accordingly all those available will be released on Monday. “Vital Maori Problem” 'The Maori Battalion was one of the outstanding units of the Allied forces in World War II: There is reason for some shame in hearing criticism of the way the Maori fits into the Walfare State,” Brigadier J. But we must see that our own house is in order.” Fast Tasman Flight High speed tail winds across the Tasman reaching 150 miles an hour enabled a Royal New Zealand Air Force 812 Canberra to reach a ground speed of 685 miles an hour in a flight from the R.A.A.F. station at Amberley, near Brisbane, to Ohakea. The flight was made by a crew engaged on a long-range navigational flight from Nev) Zealand to Australia and back. The 1530 statute miles return trip took only 155 minutes from overhead at Amberley to overhead at Ohakea. Mouse In Beer Flagon A dead mouse, a vintage sausage and “about one and a half inches of blowflies” were among contents found in beer flagons returned to the Clutha Licensing Trust. When told this at its monthly meeting the trus,t decided that employees should be instructed not to accept flagons in a filthy condition. Cycle Parking Problems At the annual prize-giving ceremony of the Christchurch Technical College yesterday,' the principal (Mr D. W Lyall) discussed recent building progress in the school grounds and its effect in diminishing the number of unauthorised bicycle parking spaces for pupils “If things are going on this way it looks as if there will soon be nowhere “Ise to park bicycles . except in the bicycle shed,” he added amid laughter. Florida Oranges There was a keen demand for the 2000 cases of Florida oranges on sale at the Christchurch produce markets yesterday. There are another 3000 cases for distribution in the rest of the South Island. The oranges, which arrived on the City of Birkenhead, are on sale in Christchurch shops for about Is 4d per lb. Further supplies of oranges before Christmas will arrive from Dunedin, where a shipment of Australian oranges will be unloaded. “Give It A Go” There was a common tendency for mottoes under coats of arms to be written in Latin, yet the motto of New Zealand was in English. said the chairman of the board of governors of Cashmere High School (Professor A. Crowther! at yesterday’s prizegiving ceremony “Our motto is ‘Onwards' which translated into the New Zealand idiom means ‘Give it a go' This is an excellent motto either for a country or for a person I commend it to you all ” College Pipe Organ A pipe organ might be installed at St Andrew’s College, said >he rector of the college (Mr L W Stewart) at he college’s prize giving ceremony yesterday afternoon Mr Stewart said that, subject to a favourable decision oy a select committee, an order or an instrument which would cost £4200 installed. would soon be placed He said that £2600 was already in hand x Fishing Rivers The Waiau and Hurunui rivers were reported dirty by the North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society at 9 a.m. yesterday The Waimakariri at the gorge and the Halswell were discoloured, and the Selwyn and Rakaia were clear and fishable.
